24 killed in Morocco urban traffic accidents in one week
Casablanca recorded a sharp toll in road safety indicators as 24 people died and 2,861 others were injured, including 118 in serious condition, in urban traffic accidents across Morocco between June 1 and June 7. The figures were released by national security authorities and cover incidents recorded inside city areas during the seven day period.
Authorities reported 2,088 traffic accidents in urban zones over the same week. The main causes identified included failure to yield right of way, speeding, driver inattention, insufficient following distance, and dangerous driving maneuvers. Additional contributing factors included disregard for traffic signals, improper overtaking, driving on the wrong side of the road, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Law enforcement units carried out large scale road safety operations alongside accident monitoring. Thousands of traffic violations were documented nationwide during the week. Police issued fines, completed official reports for multiple infractions, and impounded a significant number of vehicles as part of enforcement measures aimed at improving compliance with traffic rules.
The data highlights persistent pressure on Morocco’s urban road network, where daily traffic density remains high. The reporting period coincides with the approach of the summer travel season, a time when road movement typically increases as families travel between cities and regions, raising exposure to risk factors linked to congestion and driver fatigue.
