“A Major Step For France”: health minister announces nationwide lung cancer screening by 2030
French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced on Wednesday that lung cancer will now be included in a nationwide screening program, similar to existing initiatives for breast and colon cancer. The announcement coincided with World Cancer Day, highlighting France’s commitment to early detection and prevention.
Rist explained that the campaign will start in March, targeting over 20,000 people initially with specialized lung scans. “We aim to achieve a generalized screening for lung cancer by 2030,” she stated, stressing the importance of early diagnosis to improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality.
This initiative forms the second phase of France’s decennial health strategy (2020–2030), which focuses on prevention, research, and patient care. The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, is expected to clarify the public investment and operational details of the program later this week.
Rist described the initiative as “a major step for our country”, reflecting France’s determination to expand access to screening and strengthen national health priorities.
