Morocco Highlights Reforestation and Sustainable Practices at UNCCD COP16

Morocco is showcasing its groundbreaking efforts to combat desertification at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held from December 2 to 13 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Led by the Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF), Abderrahim Houmy, Morocco’s delegation is contributing to discussions on innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The event brings together representatives from 197 signatory countries to address desertification, land degradation, and climate change.

Morocco’s Commitment to Environmental Preservation

Morocco’s participation underscores its dedication to preserving ecosystems and combating environmental degradation. The country’s strategies align with global sustainable development goals and the UNCCD's mission. Morocco’s programs serve as models for actionable, scalable solutions to tackle climate crises, including deforestation and its adverse effects on livelihoods.

A key highlight of Morocco’s approach is the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy, launched by King Mohammed VI in 2020. This initiative emphasizes reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management. It also prioritizes scientific research, climate resilience, and reducing gender disparities in forestry.

Inclusive Programs for Sustainable Forest Management

One innovative program, “Ghabti, Hayati,” promotes inclusive forest governance by engaging local communities. It fosters reforestation, enhances ecotourism opportunities, and supports sustainable forestry practices that boost economic prospects. Morocco also integrates agroforestry and organic farming to combat deforestation while advancing sustainable agriculture.

Global Recognition and Challenges

Despite its ambitious efforts, Morocco faces challenges in achieving comprehensive reforestation. The country’s forested areas span over 9 million hectares, with an afforestation rate of 8%. Regions like the Rif and Middle Atlas have achieved a 40% reforestation rate, but the southern provinces lag with just 4%.

Morocco’s commitment has earned it recognition on the global stage. In the 2024 Nature Conservation Index, which evaluates nations on environmental protection, Morocco ranked 136th out of 180 countries.

Driving Environmental Advocacy

At COP16, Morocco is not only sharing its successes but also advocating for stronger global action against desertification and land degradation. By presenting practical solutions and emphasizing collaboration, the country aims to inspire broader commitments to environmental sustainability.

As the climate crisis continues to threaten ecosystems and communities worldwide, Morocco’s proactive measures offer valuable lessons for nations seeking sustainable and inclusive approaches to environmental challenges.
