Trump's new executive orders and immigration policies: A glimpse into his first week

In a series of actions to reshape U.S. military and immigration policies, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders on Monday. These orders, which include removing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, reinstating service members discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccines, and barring transgender individuals from military service, mark a significant shift in policy. Newly appointed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized the swift implementation of these changes.

One of the key military policies involves the creation of a missile defense system known as the "American Iron Dome," which aims to enhance national security. Trump explained that the system will offer robust protection to Americans, underscoring the importance of a strong defense.

In immigration matters, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported a record 1,179 arrests and 853 detainers issued as part of a nationwide crackdown. This surge in arrests follows Trump's efforts to address illegal immigration. Meanwhile, tensions with Colombia over deportation flights have eased, with Colombia now sending planes to repatriate its citizens.

Additionally, Trump's administration has made advancements in artificial intelligence, praising Chinese startup DeepSeek for developing a more affordable and efficient AI method, encouraging U.S. companies to keep pace with these innovations.

In other news, the U.S. Department of Justice has seen significant shakeups, including the firing of several officials connected to legal cases against Trump. Meanwhile, Scott Bessent, a billionaire investor with Democratic ties, has been confirmed as the new Treasury Secretary. The Danish government has also allocated $2 billion to enhance Arctic security near the U.S. and Russia, following Trump's past suggestion to purchase Greenland for strategic purposes.

Looking ahead, Trump's first week in office was marked by significant policy shifts, including a hiring freeze, the beginning of deportations of unauthorized immigrants, and a withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. The President is also preparing for upcoming international visits, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to meet Trump in Washington. Additionally, Trump is expected to sign the Laken Riley Act into law, aimed at detaining unauthorized immigrants involved in violent crimes.
