Iran’s foreign minister to participate in OIC meeting in Turkey during regional conflict

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is anticipated to participate in a special session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul this Saturday, according to a Turkish foreign ministry official. This gathering comes amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

The session, part of the 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, is expected to concentrate on recent Israeli attacks against Iranian targets, including the strike on the Khondab nuclear facility in Arak on Thursday. The Israeli military claimed the site housed a partially constructed heavy-water reactor, which experts warn could be used to produce weapons-grade plutonium.

Turkey has strongly condemned Israel’s actions, deeming them unlawful, and expressed support for Iran’s right to defend itself. At the opening of the two-day summit, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to urge Muslim nations to unite against destabilizing forces in the region. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will also deliver remarks during the conference.

The OIC, consisting of 57 member countries, has historically been a key political and diplomatic platform for Muslim-majority nations.
