UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, confirmed ongoing discussions between the United Kingdom and Morocco regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue. This statement was made during a parliamentary session on April 1, 2025, after Conservative MP and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Andrew Mitchell, raised the matter of supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed region.

Mitchell questioned Lammy about the UK’s stance on the conflict, urging the government to follow the example set by the United States and France. He asked whether the UK would take similar steps to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for Moroccan Sahara. Lammy responded by stating that the UK’s position is still under review, taking into account the evolving regional and international situation.

Lammy emphasized that the complex issue holds significant weight in global relations, and the UK continues to monitor developments closely, assessing various aspects of the dispute. Last year, over 30 MPs and members of the House of Lords signed a letter urging the UK government to recognize Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most viable solution to the Sahara conflict.

This shift in sentiment suggests that the UK may soon join the ranks of countries supporting Morocco’s autonomy initiative, particularly as it receives backing from major powers like the United States, France, Spain, Germany, and other influential Western nations.
