Trump to call Putin and Zelenskyy amid ceasefire push
In a new diplomatic effort to bring the war in Ukraine to a halt, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold separate phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The first call with Putin is set for 14:00 GMT, followed by talks with Zelenskyy and NATO leaders.
On Sunday, President Zelenskyy met with top US and European officials in Rome, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to "real diplomacy" in pursuit of a ceasefire agreement.
Meanwhile, Trump held a joint call with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. According to a UK government spokesperson, they discussed the urgent need for an unconditional ceasefire and urged Putin to take peace negotiations seriously.
These diplomatic moves come in the wake of Ukraine’s report that Russia launched its largest drone attack since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian authorities said a total of 273 explosive drones and decoys targeted multiple regions of the country.
