Saudi Arabia and Allies Advocate for Two-State Solution in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Saudi Arabia, alongside its global partners, is actively working to advance a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as articulated by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. He emphasized that a lasting resolution can only be achieved through the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In his remarks, Prince Faisal highlighted the formation of a coalition aimed at implementing this solution, which necessitates foundational elements such as strengthening the capabilities of the Palestinian authority. He announced plans for high-level meetings in key cities including Riyadh, Brussels, Cairo, Oslo, Amman, and Ankara to further this agenda.
Expressing concern over the ongoing violence, Prince Faisal stated, “I fail to understand how the continuation of war can be the only option. There must be other options,” reiterating calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic engagement. The recent escalation of conflict has been marked by Hamas's incursion into Israeli territory on October 7, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. Israeli military responses have devastated much of Gaza, leading to over 41,000 deaths in the enclave and drawing fears of broader regional instability involving groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In response to inquiries about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of calls for a ceasefire by the US and France, Prince Faisal expressed surprise at the lack of acceptance for proposals aimed at de-escalation. He noted that efforts to broker peace have often faltered despite moments of hope for a ceasefire.
The Saudi initiative aims not only to halt hostilities but also to lay the groundwork for establishing a Palestinian state as a critical step towards peace.
