Kenyan Politics in Turmoil: Vice President Gachagua Impeached on Corruption Charges

In a historic move that has sent shockwaves through Kenya's political landscape, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by the Senate on Thursday night. The impeachment, centered on corruption allegations, marks the first time a Kenyan vice president has been removed through constitutional means, raising significant questions about the nation's political stability and governance.

Gachagua, found guilty of five out of eleven corruption-related charges, faces accusations of embezzlement, influence peddling, and fraudulent property dealings. The 59-year-old politician has consistently dismissed these charges as "pure propaganda" and politically motivated. However, his removal from office underscores the deepening rift within President William Ruto's administration.

The impeachment process unfolded against a backdrop of recent anti-government protests in June and July, during which at least 60 people lost their lives. These demonstrations, fueled by rising economic hardship, saw protesters demanding President Ruto's resignation. Critics accused Gachagua of failing to support the president during this crisis, further straining the relationship between Kenya's top leaders.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot defended the impeachment, stating, "This was the only constitutional remedy. Impeachment was necessary to address the political paralysis that has gripped the presidency and vice presidency, affecting the broader governance of the country."

The proceedings were not without controversy. Gachagua's absence from critical moments of his own defense, due to hospitalization for chest pains, added drama to the night. His legal team's request for a delay in the Senate vote was rejected, prompting concerns from some lawmakers about the fairness of the process.

Senator Karungo Thangwaune argued, "The speed at which this was carried out raises important questions about due process. Why conduct a late-night vote when the vice president is absent and unwell? This moment deserves a thorough and transparent process."

The impeachment of Gachagua, once a key ally who played a crucial role in Ruto's narrow 2022 election victory, particularly in the strategic Mount Kenya region, signals a turning point in Kenyan politics. It highlights the ongoing struggle with corruption that has long plagued the country's political elite and reflects a growing disconnect between the leadership and the population.

As Kenya grapples with this political upheaval, President Ruto now faces the critical task of nominating a new vice president within 14 days, a decision that will require parliamentary approval. This choice could either stabilize the administration or further exacerbate the already fragile political climate.

The impeachment of Vice President Gachagua serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Kenya's democracy and the urgent need for political reform. As the nation moves forward, all eyes will be on President Ruto and his administration to see how they navigate this turbulent period and address the underlying issues that have led to this unprecedented political crisis.
