Bermuda Braces for Hurricane Ernesto's Onslaught: Dangerous Winds and Flooding Imminent
Hurricane Ernesto, a formidable Category 2 storm, is poised to unleash its fury on Bermuda, bringing a life-threatening combination of floods, storm surges, and winds reaching up to 100 mph. Forecasters warn that perilous conditions could begin as early as Friday, with the storm’s impact likely to be felt within the next 24 hours.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. update, Ernesto was located 310 miles southwest of the North Atlantic island, advancing steadily at 13 mph. The entire island is now under a hurricane warning, with rainfall predictions of up to 15 inches.
The storm’s reach is extensive, with hurricane-force winds of at least 74 mph expected to extend 70 miles from its center. Even more far-reaching are the tropical storm-force winds of at least 39 mph, which are anticipated to be felt up to 265 miles away.
“Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” urged the National Hurricane Center, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Ernesto’s eye is projected to pass over or near Bermuda on Saturday, with the possibility of further intensification before its arrival. Forecasts indicate that the storm will maintain its large size and strength throughout the weekend.
The NHC has issued a stark warning about the impending storm surge: “A dangerous storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding on Bermuda in areas of onshore winds. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.”
The storm’s influence extends beyond Bermuda, with its swells expected to impact the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas. Even the U.S. East Coast may feel Ernesto’s effects from Friday through the weekend, potentially resulting in hazardous surf and rip currents.
“Beachgoers should be aware of a significant risk of life-threatening surf and rip currents, and stay out of the water if advised by lifeguards,” cautioned the hurricane center. This warning has been echoed by National Weather Service offices along the eastern U.S., including Mount Holly, Pennsylvania.
Ernesto has already demonstrated its destructive potential in Puerto Rico, where approximately half of the island’s 1.4 million energy customers lost power on Wednesday, despite the storm not making direct landfall.
Looking ahead, Ernesto is projected to continue its northward trajectory, passing east of Newfoundland on Monday.
As Bermuda prepares for this impending natural disaster, authorities stress the importance of heeding warnings and taking all necessary precautions to ensure public safety.
