Bonneuil-sur-Marne, France —A tranquil Eid al-Adha celebration turned tense on June 16 when an armed man intruded upon a gathering of approximately 2,000 people at a local gymnasium. The swift intervention of Mayor Denis Öztorun and courageous residents averted a potential tragedy, underscoring the community's resilience and solidarity.

The incident unfolded during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, a time typically marked by joy and communal prayers. As men, women, and children filled the gymnasium, an armed man suddenly entered, causing immediate alarm. Mayor Öztorun, who was present to extend festive greetings, along with several brave citizens, quickly confronted and subdued the intruder.

French media outlets reported that the man was promptly handed over to the police. While two individuals sustained minor injuries during the intervention, the situation was contained, resulting in “more fear than harm,” as officials described.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, Mayor Öztorun commended the bravery of the local residents and called for calm and caution. “It is crucial to avoid any unhealthy speculation,” he urged, emphasizing that the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the intruder's motive.

Mayor Öztorun also highlighted the importance of community unity in times of crisis. He stressed the need to uphold the values of fraternity, solidarity, and peace, urging residents to stand together and support each other in the aftermath of the incident.
