Morocco Braces for Powerful Windstorms and Dust Squalls Amid Delayed Winter Relief
Morocco finds itself confronting a weather paradox as a delayed winter season brings both relief and challenges to the North African nation. According to a recent weather alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology, several provinces across the country are poised to experience powerful windstorms accompanied by swirling dust squalls on Friday.
Beginning from midnight until 10 a.m., the coastal provinces of El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Essaouira, and Safi are expected to bear the brunt of fierce winds gusting between 75 and 90 kilometers per hour, whipping up localized dust storms in their wake. This ominous weather pattern is also forecasted to impact the provinces of Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, Tetouan, M'diq Fnideq, Fahs Anjra, Tangier, and Assilah.
Inland regions are not spared from nature's tempestuous wrath either, as Driouch, Figuig, Jerada, Taourirt, Guercif, Oujda-Angad, Boulemane, Sefrou, Taza, Ifrane, Tinghir, Ouarzzate, Midelt, Errachidia, Zagora, and Tata brace for the impending windstorms and dust squalls.
This severe weather warning arrives amidst a period of windy and chilly conditions that have swept across various Moroccan provinces, including the major cities of Rabat and Casablanca. Preceding this ominous forecast, the nation has experienced heavy rainfall in recent days, offering much-needed relief for a country grappling with severe drought challenges for several years.
Moroccans have taken to social media, sharing picturesque images of snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the city of Ifrane blanketed in white, embracing the delayed arrival of winter. This climatic shift holds the promise of replenishing the nation's water reservoirs, which have been depleted due to rising temperatures and excessive consumption.
However, a report published by the European Union's Joint Research Council (JRC) paints a grim picture, warning that Morocco and the wider Mediterranean region face deepening drought challenges. The report highlights Morocco as an area of severe concern, with the country's dams holding alarmingly low water capacity compared to previous years.
