Weather Alert: Morocco Prepares for Intense Heat Wave, with Temperatures Reaching 41°C
In stark contrast to recent rainfall relief, Morocco braces for a scorching heat wave expected to sweep across several provinces from Saturday to Monday. The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an "orange" alert, forecasting temperatures ranging from a sultry 32°C to a blistering 41°C in various regions of the kingdom.
The provinces of Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Tiznit, Taroudant, Chtouka Ait Baha, Guelmim, Sidi Ifni, Tan-Tan, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Laayoune, Es-Semara, Tarfaya, Aousserd, and Oued Ed-Dahab are bracing for the brunt of the heat wave, with temperatures soaring between 36°C and a scorching 41°C over the weekend.
Additionally, the provinces of Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, Settat, El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Marrakech, Essaouira, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Chichaoua, Azilal, Al-Haouz, Rehamna, Safi, and Youssoufia will also experience hot weather, with temperatures ranging from 34°C to 38°C.
Meanwhile, areas such as Berrechid, Benslimane, Nouaceur, Casablanca, Mediouna, Mohammedia, Khemisset, and Skhirate-Temara can expect temperatures between 32°C and 35°C on Sunday, according to the DGM statement.
This scorching heat wave follows recent rainfall, providing much-needed respite and boosting reserves in Moroccan dams. As of March 13, reserves in dams in the Souss-Massa area stood at 101.261 million cubic meters, representing 13.7% of total storage capacity, with adequate fill levels across the region.
While the rainfall was welcomed last week, it remains uncertain whether the impending heat wave will impact Morocco's ability to store water effectively. Authorities and residents alike prepare for sweltering conditions, which will undoubtedly strain resources and test the nation's resilience.
