Fahmi Saïd: "Africa Must Pool Its Efforts to Protect Its Maritime Wealth"
At the 2024 MEDays Forum, Fahmi Saïd, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Comoros, highlighted a crucial issue for Africa: the protection of its maritime wealth. In an exclusive statement to Walaw, he emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to effectively combat the threats endangering the continent's maritime resources.
"The issue we addressed today focused on the challenges of protecting Africa’s maritime wealth," stated Fahmi Saïd. According to him, fraud, piracy, and the illegal exploitation of maritime resources are major challenges that no African country can tackle alone.
"Individually, no country has the means to effectively fight these threats. The solution lies in pooling resources and efforts," he asserted.
This realization led to a clear conclusion: increased cooperation among African nations is indispensable. Forum participants agreed that pooling resources and expertise is the only way to sustainably protect Africa's maritime zones.
Fahmi Saïd also praised Morocco’s key role in this dynamic. He highlighted the Kingdom's proactive diplomacy, driven by King Mohammed VI, as a unifying force for Africa in addressing shared challenges.
"We expect a lot from Morocco, which today plays a major role in uniting the entire continent," he remarked.
Morocco, with its assertive and inclusive diplomacy, is seen as a model for other African countries. Fahmi Saïd highlighted numerous Moroccan initiatives in strategic sectors such as public health, finance, research, and advanced industries.
"Today, Moroccan diplomacy is at the forefront of what it can offer. It integrates and unites African countries around a common vision," he added.
A key element of his statement was the call for Africa to develop its own approach and solutions. Fahmi Saïd stressed that, "Africa must think for itself and not through an externally imposed vision." He viewed cooperation with Morocco as a unique opportunity for the continent to address its challenges with self-driven solutions.
He also emphasized the importance of strong leadership to guide this dynamic.
"Morocco has demonstrated its potential and its ability to bring countries together, and all of Africa stands to benefit from uniting around it," he concluded.
Fahmi Saïd's statement reflects a shared aspiration among many participants: to build a united, sovereign, and resilient Africa. With maritime wealth representing a major strategic concern, cooperation and Moroccan leadership emerge as essential levers for turning this vision into reality.
