US prepares new tariff measures targeting around 60 economies

The United States is preparing a new round of tariff measures that could affect approximately 60 economies, according to a senior White House trade official, signaling another potential escalation in Washington's evolving trade strategy.

The announcement suggests the administration is moving closer to replacing temporary import duties introduced after last year's legal challenges to earlier tariff policies.

New trade measures expected soon

Speaking in an interview with CNBC, US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer said additional tariff decisions are expected to be announced in the near future, although he declined to provide a precise timetable.

Greer indicated that several ongoing trade investigations are nearing completion, with outcomes anticipated before the end of the week. Those inquiries reportedly examine a range of commercial practices, including concerns related to forced labor and other trade compliance issues.

The findings are expected to shape the next phase of US tariff policy.

Temporary duties set to be replaced

The planned measures are intended to succeed the temporary 10% tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump after the US Supreme Court invalidated a previous set of tariffs implemented the year before.

The administration has maintained that revised trade measures are necessary to preserve leverage in addressing what it considers unfair commercial practices and to protect domestic industries while complying with the latest legal framework.

Major trading partners could be affected

Although no official list of targeted countries has been released, the proposed tariffs could extend to several of the United States' largest trading partners, including the European Union.

Any broad-based tariff expansion would likely draw close attention from governments, multinational companies and global supply chains, particularly as businesses continue adapting to shifting trade regulations and geopolitical uncertainty.

The anticipated announcement is expected to provide greater clarity on the scope of the measures and the industries most likely to be impacted, potentially influencing international trade relations in the months ahead.
