Trump administration weighs cutting ties with UN refugee agency

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering ending its relationship with the United Nations refugee agency, according to sources cited by Reuters, raising concerns about the future of U.S. support for international refugee protection efforts.

The United States has historically been one of the largest financial contributors to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Any decision to withdraw from the agency or significantly reduce its funding could have major consequences for humanitarian operations supporting displaced populations around the world.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, Washington had been considering a complete withdrawal from the agency, with a decision reportedly expected last week. However, no official announcement was made, suggesting that diplomatic efforts and pressure from supporters of the organization may have delayed the process.

The dispute is reportedly linked to disagreements over the appointment of a senior UNHCR official. The agency is said to have warned some of its supporters that it could potentially be placed on a U.S. blacklist, a move that could lead to the suspension of American funding.

Diplomats and humanitarian officials have expressed concern that a loss of U.S. financial support could further weaken the agency at a time when global displacement remains at historically high levels. The UNHCR plays a central role in providing protection and assistance to refugees and displaced people in numerous regions.

The U.S. State Department, meanwhile, has said that there have been no changes to Washington's participation in the organization. It has also indicated that the administration continues to review the country's involvement in international institutions, as part of a broader policy that has already included funding cuts and withdrawals from several United Nations-related bodies.

The reported dispute has also focused on the appointment of American diplomat Theresa Ray Finerty as deputy high commissioner, instead of U.S. candidate Simon Hankinson. Hankinson has previously criticised the UNHCR, accusing it of supporting policies that encourage large-scale migration.

Any decision by Washington to sever ties with the refugee agency could have far-reaching implications for the international refugee protection system. Humanitarian organizations have warned that reduced funding from one of the agency's most important donors could limit its ability to respond to conflicts, displacement and humanitarian emergencies worldwide.
