Venezuela political dialogue set for in-person launch next week

Venezuela is preparing to open a new chapter in its political crisis as government representatives and members of the opposition have confirmed that face-to-face negotiations will begin in Caracas next week, marking the first in-person round of talks in months.

The meetings were initially expected to start on August 1 but have now been postponed by several days. Both delegations say the revised timetable will allow them to formally launch discussions aimed at addressing the country's political future and immediate humanitarian priorities.

The negotiations come seven months after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, an event that dramatically reshaped Venezuela's political landscape. Since then, interim leader Delcy Rodríguez has overseen the administration while operating under strong political influence from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly encouraged dialogue between the rival camps.

Many political analysts view the negotiations as a potential opportunity to establish a roadmap toward democratic reforms and eventually define an electoral timetable capable of restoring institutional stability.

Opposition leader absent from negotiations

One of the most notable developments is the absence of opposition figure María Corina Machado, who is living in exile in Panama. Despite international calls for her inclusion, she will not participate in the negotiations.

Although Machado has distanced herself from the process, she has indicated that she will not seek to obstruct the talks, signaling cautious support for efforts that could advance a peaceful political solution.

Instead, opposition representative Dinorah Figuera will lead her delegation during the negotiations. Figuera confirmed that discussions with government negotiator Jorge Rodríguez resulted in an agreement to convene the first in-person meeting in Caracas next week.

Agenda focuses on humanitarian and democratic issues

According to statements released by both delegations, negotiators have agreed on a structured agenda centered on several priority issues.

The first session is expected to address support for victims of the recent twin earthquakes that caused widespread destruction and thousands of fatalities, alongside broader discussions on strengthening democratic institutions and expanding political rights and guarantees.

Both sides also emphasized that the negotiations will follow clearly defined and measurable objectives, suggesting an effort to establish accountability throughout the dialogue process.

Experienced negotiators join the process

The government delegation will include several senior political figures, among them former Vice President and former Foreign Affairs Minister Jorge Arreaza. Arreaza previously chaired the parliamentary commission responsible for overseeing the implementation of the amnesty legislation that facilitated the release of hundreds of political prisoners.

For the opposition, Figuera's team consists primarily of lesser-known political representatives rather than the coalition's most prominent leaders. Figuera previously headed the opposition-controlled National Assembly elected in 2015, whose legitimacy was later rejected by Maduro's administration.

High expectations despite persistent divisions

The upcoming negotiations represent one of the most significant attempts in recent months to bridge Venezuela's deep political divide. While major opposition figures remain outside the process and significant disagreements persist, observers believe sustained dialogue could provide a foundation for confidence-building measures, humanitarian cooperation and, eventually, broader constitutional and electoral reforms.

Whether the discussions produce tangible political progress will largely depend on both parties' willingness to translate negotiated commitments into concrete actions during the weeks ahead.
