Google io 2026 introduces major Gemini ai updates

Google opened its annual developer conference with a set of major updates to its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant, focusing on giving users more control over how the model reasons through queries. The announcements centered on new tools that adjust response depth, as well as broader changes to voice features and system integration across the company’s ecosystem.

A key addition is a “thinking level” control that lets users choose how much computational reasoning Gemini applies to a request. The option ranges from fast, lightweight responses to deeper, more structured analysis for complex tasks such as coding or problem solving. The goal is to address long standing feedback that AI systems often lack flexibility in balancing speed and depth.

The web version of Gemini is set to introduce a slider that allows users to switch between different reasoning intensities, while mobile users are already seeing a limited rollout. Early configurations include standard and extended reasoning modes tied to newer Gemini model variants. Developers also gain access to a parameter that defines reasoning depth on a scale from minimal to high, aligning consumer tools with existing developer environments.

Alongside these changes, Google is preparing to retire its current set of ten assistant voices, which it now classifies as legacy options. These voices will be replaced with new alternatives, although the company has not yet detailed their final lineup. The transition reflects a broader redesign of the assistant experience ahead of upcoming releases.

The updates arrive as the conference continues over a two day program at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, where the company is expected to outline its roadmap for future Gemini models, Android 17, and deeper integration of artificial intelligence across its services. The timing suggests an early rollout strategy ahead of major platform announcements during the keynote presentation.
