Iran denounces new US sanctions as “malicious”

Iran has sharply criticized the latest round of U.S. sanctions targeting a fleet of oil tankers and container ships allegedly operated by the son of a key political advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the measures as “malicious,” accusing Washington of attempting to undermine Iran's economy. “The new American sanctions against Iran’s oil trade represent a hostile act aimed at sabotaging our economic development and the welfare of the Iranian people,” Baghaei stated on Thursday.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the sanctions earlier this week, targeting entities allegedly involved in circumventing oil export restrictions. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to maintain pressure on Iran amid ongoing tensions related to its nuclear program and regional influence.

Iranian officials argue that such sanctions are illegal under international law and unfairly punish ordinary citizens. Tehran maintains that its oil trade is conducted within its sovereign rights and that these measures are politically motivated.

The diplomatic standoff between Iran and the United States continues, despite international calls for dialogue and de-escalation. Washington insists its actions aim to deter illicit financial networks supporting Iran’s military and political elites.
