Arrest made in assassination threat against Trump

An undocumented immigrant has been apprehended after sending a handwritten letter to government officials, threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump. The individual, identified as 54-year-old Ramon Morales-Reyes, is a Mexican national currently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Wisconsin, pending deportation proceedings.

In his letter, dated May 21, Morales-Reyes expressed his intent to "shoot your precious president in is [sic] head" before claiming he would self-deport back to Mexico. Authorities reported that Reyes has a history of multiple arrests and attempts to illegally enter the United States.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem praised ICE officers for their swift action in arresting Reyes, stating, "This illegal alien who threatened to assassinate President Trump is behind bars." The letter, which was shared by Homeland Security, revealed Reyes's frustrations regarding deportations affecting his family, culminating in a threat against the president.

Reyes had previously attempted to enter the U.S. illegally on nine occasions between 1998 and 2005 and faced charges for a felony hit-and-run incident. His mention of self-deportation appears to reference a recent initiative by the DHS offering financial incentives for voluntary departures from the U.S.

This incident adds to concerns regarding threats against President Trump, particularly following a previous assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. In light of these events, Noem urged political figures and media representatives to moderate their rhetoric to prevent further incitement of violence.

As the nation grapples with immigration issues and political tensions, the repercussions of such threats highlight the ongoing challenges faced by security agencies in safeguarding public figures.
