iPhone 16 leads global smartphone sales in 2025

The iPhone 16 topped worldwide smartphone sales in 2025, with Apple claiming seven of the top ten spots, according to fresh data from market research firm Counterpoint Research. This ranking highlights Apple's strong performance across consumer and premium models throughout the year, while Samsung held three positions, mostly with entry-level devices rather than flagships.

Counterpoint's model-by-model breakdown places the iPhone 16 first, followed by the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro in second and third. The iPhone 17 Pro Max ranks fourth, reflecting robust demand despite its late-year launch. Samsung's first entry, the Galaxy A16 5G, lands fifth, with the Galaxy A06 4G sixth. The Galaxy S25 Ultra, the list's lone Android premium phone, sits ninth.

A standout: the base iPhone 17 cracked the global top ten after just three months on sale, outpacing the iPhone 16's early trajectory a year prior, per Counterpoint figures reported across outlets. The iPhone 17 series posted 16 percent higher sales than its predecessor in its first full market quarter, driven by strong uptake in the United States, China, and Western Europe.

The top ten from Apple and Samsung accounted for 19 percent of all 2025 smartphone shipments a highly concentrated result showing how a handful of models capture growing global volume. Looking ahead, Counterpoint expects premium high-end devices to gain further share in 2026 as rising memory costs hit entry- and mid-range phones harder.
