Xai accused of using Claude outputs to train Grok

A major artificial intelligence dispute has emerged over allegations that xAI used outputs from Anthropic’s Claude model to train its own systems. According to accounts from people familiar with internal projects, the company carried out months of model distillation work focused on coding capabilities. The practice allegedly continued even after Anthropic restricted access in early 2026.

The reported activity intensified after Anthropic blocked xAI’s enterprise access to Claude in January 2026. Internal communications described a shift toward alternative access methods. Engineers allegedly used personal accounts to continue querying Claude, which led to further account suspensions. The company also reportedly routed requests through third party tools such as Blackbox AI to maintain access to model outputs for benchmarking and research purposes.

The claims center on a broader technique known as model distillation, where one system is trained using outputs generated by another model. Industry conditions typically prohibit using competitor responses to build rival systems. The allegations also follow earlier statements attributed to Elon Musk in a legal setting, where he acknowledged partial use of external AI technology in training Grok, while framing such practices as widespread in the sector.

The controversy mirrors parallel disputes within the AI industry over data extraction and model replication. Anthropic has previously accused several Chinese AI developers of large scale automated querying of Claude to replicate its behavior, involving tens of thousands of accounts and millions of interactions. These incidents have intensified competition over proprietary model access and training data control across the sector.

The tensions unfold alongside a complex commercial relationship between the two companies. Anthropic has reportedly agreed to lease substantial computing infrastructure from xAI, including access to large GPU clusters under long term arrangements valued in the billions. Despite the allegations, neither company has publicly confirmed details of the reported distillation activities or the methods used to maintain access after restrictions were imposed.
