Morocco has reached a significant milestone in the development of its medical cannabis industry with the recent export of a shipment of the local "Beldiya" cannabis variety to Australia. This shipment marks a crucial step in the international expansion of Morocco’s regulated cannabis sector, following earlier exports to Switzerland and an African country, underscoring the growing strength of Moroccan cannabis exports.

The export operation was authorized by all relevant authorities, including the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis (ANRAC), the national medicines agency, and customs officials. It represents the culmination of extensive coordination with Australian health and pharmaceutical regulators to ensure compliance with international standards.

On the same day as the Australian shipment, over 400 kilograms of cannabidiol (CBD) products were dispatched to Switzerland. These products originate from fully legal cultivations established since 2023. The "Beldiya" variety, native to the mountainous northern regions, has seen its cultivated area expand from 1,400 hectares to more than 3,000 hectares in 2024, a remarkable increase of 2.5 times in a single season.

These cultivation areas operate under strict contracts between authorized agricultural cooperatives and licensed economic operators, with the medical and pharmaceutical industries as the sole market outlets. The regulatory framework mandates a THC content below 1%, with any production exceeding this limit or failing to meet standards subject to destruction.

Beyond economic benefits, this transformation represents a profound social and territorial revolution. Regions historically associated with illegal cannabis cultivation are now integrated into a legal, structured framework that generates employment and economic development. Morocco is positioning itself to become a major global actor in the medical cannabis market, while revitalizing marginalized territories.

This progress aligns with Morocco’s broader ambition to lead the global medical cannabis industry, supported by government agencies and international partnerships. The sector’s growth promises significant economic returns and advances in pharmaceutical innovation, contributing to global healthcare solutions.
