Cassava Technologies, founded by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa, has unveiled an ambitious project to revolutionize technological innovation in Africa. In partnership with global tech giant NVIDIA, the company plans to establish the continent’s first artificial intelligence (AI) factory.

This initiative aims to create an advanced infrastructure to accelerate AI development across Africa. Cassava is set to begin the project's first phase in June 2025, integrating NVIDIA’s high-performance computing software into its data centers in South Africa. The expansion will later extend to Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, and Nigeria, according to an official company statement.

Masiyiwa emphasized that this project marks a critical moment for Africa in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The AI factory will provide cutting-edge technological tools, empowering African startups, innovators, and researchers to transform ideas into real-world applications.

Through this partnership, Cassava seeks to lead the introduction of accelerated computing technologies in Africa as part of a broader strategy to foster local technological innovation and drive digital transformation.

Meanwhile, global corporations are increasingly investing in Africa’s digital infrastructure. Microsoft and the UAE-based AI firm G42 are among the key players, with G42 planning a $1 billion geothermal-powered data center in Kenya to expand cloud capabilities in East Africa.
