Dacia Sandero leads European car market, built in Morocco's rising automotive hub

The Dacia Sandero emerged as Europe’s best-selling car in 2024, with over 300,000 units registered across the continent, according to automotive publication Diariomotor. Notably, the majority of these vehicles are manufactured in Morocco, positioning the country as a pivotal player in Europe’s automotive supply chain.

Morocco’s role in Sandero’s success

The Sandero is primarily produced at Renault-Dacia’s factories in Tangier and Casablanca, with additional contributions from a facility in Mioveni, Romania. The Moroccan plants, however, supply most of the vehicles, cementing their importance in the European market.

Praised for its affordability and practicality, the Sandero has captivated buyers across Europe. Starting at €13,490 in Spain, the model offers an economical option for consumers navigating rising living costs. In 2024, 28,000 Sanderos were sold in Spain alone, where it outperformed competitors like the MG ZS, Seat Ibiza, Seat Arona, and Toyota Corolla.

Morocco: Africa’s automotive leader

Morocco’s ascent as a global automotive hub is no accident. With strategically located factories in cities like Tangier and Casablanca, competitive production costs, and robust industrial infrastructure, the North African country has become the continent’s largest car exporter.

Government support has been instrumental, with industrial zones, fiscal incentives, and workforce training initiatives fostering growth in the sector. This has enabled Morocco to produce hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually, mostly for export to Europe and beyond.

Looking ahead

As Morocco continues investing in technology and sustainability, its automotive industry is poised to expand further. The country’s proximity to European markets, combined with its commitment to innovation, ensures its position as a key player in the global car production landscape.
