A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck waters off the southern Philippines on Wednesday, shaking parts of the region but causing no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, according to authorities.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) located the earthquake's epicenter approximately 32 kilometres southwest of Sarangani Island, near the larger island of Mindanao. The agency said there was no tsunami warning associated with the seismic event.
Emergency officials report no immediate impact
Local emergency responders said the earthquake was felt while government officials were distributing financial assistance to residents, resulting in large crowds being gathered at the time of the tremor.
Despite the situation, authorities reported that everyone present remained safe.
Rescue official Hary Sauro said preliminary assessments indicated there was little expectation of fatalities or major structural damage based on the characteristics of the earthquake and the initial inspections carried out after the shaking.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, where the movement of tectonic plates frequently generates earthquakes and volcanic activity.
