UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the rising violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank and recent calls for annexation. His remarks came after Israel announced an extended military presence in the territory, with troops set to remain in refugee camps for several months.

The ongoing military operation has displaced tens of thousands of Palestinians, particularly in northern areas such as Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. On Sunday, Israel expanded its offensive by deploying tanks in Jenin—marking the first use of tanks in the West Bank since the end of the Second Intifada in 2005.

The surge in violence follows the outbreak of war in Gaza after Hamas’s deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Guterres underscored the need to uphold the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, warning against renewed hostilities.

"It is time for a permanent ceasefire, the dignified release of all hostages, and irreversible progress towards a two-state solution," he stated. He reaffirmed the necessity of ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state, with Gaza as an integral part.
