Afghanistan: Taliban say returning Bagram airbase to US Is impossible
The Taliban government in Afghanistan has declared that it is “impossible” to return the former U.S. airbase at Bagram to the United States, following threats of unspecified sanctions from President Donald Trump.
The Bagram airbase, a key military facility used by the United States until its withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, has become a point of contention in U.S.-Taliban relations. Trump warned on Saturday that Afghanistan could face sanctions if the base is not handed back.
Fasihuddin Fitrat, Chief of Staff at Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, told local media on Sunday that any agreement to transfer even a small portion of Afghan territory would not be possible. “Recently, some parties claimed to have started negotiations with Afghanistan to regain the Bagram airbase,” he said, adding that “an agreement on even one square centimeter of Afghan soil is impossible.”
The statement reflects the Taliban’s firm stance on national sovereignty and control over former U.S. military installations, a sensitive issue as international relations continue to evolve in the region.
