Tunisia experienced a significant surge in social protests during 2024, with 2,639 demonstrations recorded nationwide, according to the Social Observatory of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights.

The protests gained momentum throughout the year, with a notable escalation in the fourth quarter reaching 826 demonstrations, up from 752 in the third quarter, 586 in the second, and 475 in the first quarter. By December, protests related to violent incidents had risen to 17% of all demonstrations.

Professional and social grievances emerged as the primary drivers, constituting one-third of fourth-quarter protests. Workers voiced concerns over inadequate working conditions, equipment shortages, unresolved professional status issues, delayed wages, and unjust dismissals. Demands for permanent employment, adherence to existing agreements, and enhanced protection for public health and education institutions featured prominently.

Sit-ins dominated the protest landscape, representing nearly 40% of fourth-quarter actions, while media appeals accounted for 111 cases. The capital city of Tunis led with 137 protests, followed by Kairouan (110), Gafsa (99), and Medenine (48). The regions of Beja and Ariana recorded the lowest numbers, with seven protests each.

The data, highlighted by Tunisian media, reflects growing social and economic tensions across the country, with labor groups and social organizations at the forefront of these demonstrations.
