The British Council marks its 90th anniversary with a celebration of its profound contributions to English language learning and cultural exchange in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This milestone includes the launch of the research report The Future of English: Global Perspectives, a pivotal study offering insights into the evolving role of English worldwide. This initiative reflects the organization's enduring commitment to advancing educational, professional, and social opportunities through the English language.

 A Historical and Global Perspective  


As a leader in language education and research, the British Council has built a legacy over nine decades. The new report builds on influential predecessors, including The Future of English (1997) and English Next (2006) by David Graddol. Through a global research initiative, the latest publication incorporates findings from roundtable discussions with policymakers, educators, and stakeholders, providing valuable regional and international perspectives.

 Regional Insights into the Future of English  


The report highlights distinct trends in the MENA region, reflecting the growing importance of English across educational, professional, and social domains. Stakeholders from diverse sub-regions, including the Maghreb, Gulf countries, and the Levant, shared their views on the future of English:

- Maghreb (Morocco, Tunisia, Libya):

English demand is on the rise, driven by aspirations for better educational and professional opportunities. In Morocco, youth express a desire for English to supplant French, although consensus emphasizes a balanced multilingual approach. 


- Gulf States (Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar):

English serves increasingly as a lingua franca. The pandemic accelerated technological advancements and flexible learning modes, highlighting the need for digital skills among educators.  


- Egypt and the Levant (Yemen, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Jordan):

English is pivotal for economic mobility. However, uneven teaching quality and unequal access to technology pose significant challenges. Addressing these disparities is essential for equitable learning opportunities.  

Transformative Role of Technology  


The integration of technology has revolutionized language learning in the MENA region. Digital tools have enhanced access to high-quality resources, enabling learners and educators to adapt even during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This digital shift underscores the need for continuous professional development and innovative teaching strategies.

Rethinking Language Policies  


The report advocates for modernized language learning policies that meet evolving learner needs. Traditional methods overly focused on grammar and spelling are giving way to more dynamic approaches, emphasizing communicative competence and cultural fluency.
