Morocco has established itself as a significant player in the global berry market, according to a recent article published by the French public information radio (RFI). The report highlights the country’s impressive growth in the production and export of various berries, particularly in Europe.

The article notes that Moroccan blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries have secured prominent positions on international shelves, showcasing a remarkable success story for this sector. This achievement, RFI emphasizes, stems from over 40 years of dedicated experience. Initially, production was limited to a few hectares of strawberries grown in open fields, but it has since expanded and diversified, thanks to modern farming techniques.

Abdeslam Acharki, director of the Interprofessional Federation of Red Fruits, explained to the French radio that the significant development of strawberry farming began in the 1980s with the introduction of irrigated zones. He mentioned that Moroccan berries are exported to approximately sixty countries worldwide, with 90% of exports directed toward the European market.

RFI attributes this impressive performance to the establishment of a robust ecosystem in Morocco, which includes the construction of agro-industrial infrastructures. The government has also supported the sector through subsidies, further enhancing its growth.

Younès El Amouri, a producer and packager of red fruits, highlighted the advantages of Morocco's climate and early harvests. "In Morocco, berries are harvested almost year-round," he noted, adding that the kingdom also benefits from a skilled and cost-effective workforce. He pointed out that most multinational companies have set up operations in Morocco due to its proximity to the European Union, the primary customer for these products.

As the strawberry market faces increasing competition, RFI notes Morocco's recent venture into a more lucrative crop: blueberries. Youssef Bensajjay, an agricultural economist quoted by RFI, observed that blueberry production has significantly increased in the northern region of Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima.

The radio concluded that the prospects for Morocco's berry sector look promising, with the country now aiming for new markets, including Japan.
