In a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering its North Africa operations, XPO Logistics has announced a substantial expansion in Morocco. This ambitious plan includes the introduction of new shipping routes and the deployment of a fleet of 60 advanced container trailers, all while targeting a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The expansion is a response to the company’s success in surpassing 30,000 cross-border shipments between Europe and Morocco, which has resulted in a tripling of revenue in the region since 2018.

The focus of this expansion lies in high-growth corridors, notably a new dedicated connection between Morocco’s Port of Tangier and Spain’s Motril terminal. This route is anticipated to handle 35-40% of XPO’s Europe-Morocco traffic by 2025.

As Morocco emerges as a key hub for global manufacturing and trade, XPO’s investment aims to provide faster, greener logistics solutions for sectors including automotive, retail, and construction.

Smarter fleet, cleaner operations

Central to this expansion is a significant investment in 60 next-generation container trailers. These trailers are equipped with GPS tracking technology and are designed to maximize load efficiency. This new fleet will enhance transport capacity by 50%, thereby eliminating unnecessary trips and reducing fuel consumption.

“The expansion of our operations in Morocco—coupled with more than 30,000 shipments as of 2024 and new investments—demonstrates our commitment to increasingly efficient, innovative, and sustainable cross-border logistics,” stated Massimo Marsili, XPO’s Managing Director for Southern Europe and Morocco.

“Morocco is a strategic market experiencing rapid growth, and we aim to spearhead this development with solutions that are agile, scalable, and focused on the practical needs of our customers.”

XPO’s operations in the Gibraltar Strait already encompass 400 monthly duo trailer crossings, and the new Motril route is projected to contribute to a 10% reduction in emissions, aligning with Morocco’s sustainability goals.

This move by XPO Logistics is indicative of a broader strategy to dominate high-growth trade lanes through technology-driven and eco-efficient solutions. As activity along the North Africa-Europe corridor intensifies, the company is poised to make further investments in automation and real-time logistics tracking.
