U.S. affirms support for Moroccan autonomy as solution to the Moroccan Sahara dispute
In a continued effort to find a political resolution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Lisa D. Kenna, held a pivotal meeting on April 10, 2025, in New York with Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara.
This meeting aimed to explore potential avenues for a mutually agreed political settlement, underscoring the ongoing international focus on this complex issue. During the discussions, Kenna highlighted the significant role played by de Mistura, praising his "valuable and ongoing contributions" in advancing the political process.
In a statement following the meeting, Kenna conveyed the United States' position, as reiterated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasizing that "true autonomy, under Moroccan sovereignty, is the only realistic and possible solution" to the conflict.
This stance is consistent with the U.S. administration's continued support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, which was introduced in 2007. Rubio described the proposal as "serious, credible, and realistic." The U.S. believes that this approach represents the best way to resolve the conflict and ensure regional stability, aligning with broader efforts to promote political and economic stability in North Africa, especially considering the region's security and economic challenges.
