Spanish Photographer Wins Underwater Photographer of the Year for Stunning Whale Image
A Spanish photographer has been named Underwater Photographer of the Year for capturing an intimate and emotional shot of a humpback whale and her calf. The image, described as a poignant portrayal of a mother’s love, showcases the delicate beauty and vulnerability of life in the ocean. Judges praised the image for its delicate yet powerful representation of the bond between the mother and calf, reflecting the goodness of our world. Peter Rowlands, one of the judges, noted that while humanity faces many challenges, the rising number of humpback whales globally is a testament to what can be achieved.
The prestigious competition, which has been held since 1965, celebrates the art of underwater photography across various environments, including oceans, lakes, rivers, and swimming pools. It features 13 categories, such as macro, wide-angle, behavior, and wreck photography.
In other awards, British photographer David Alpert earned the title of British Underwater Photographer of the Year for his captivating image "The Curious Seal." Alpert's photo challenges the common perception that British waters are murky and lifeless, capturing the playful and curious nature of seals in Lundy Island, a marine protected area.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Ruruka was named the Up and Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year. His stunning image "Underwater Aurora" was taken in a cenote sinkhole in Mexico. Ruruka, who traveled 24 hours to capture the photo during the rainy season, highlighted the unique and colorful scene created by tannin-rich water filling the sinkhole.
