London to recognize Palestinian state

The United Kingdom and Portugal are set to officially recognize the State of Palestine on Sunday, a move that comes ahead of similar announcements expected from other countries. The decision, however, has been denounced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who described it as a “danger” to Israel’s existence.

In recent months, a growing number of countries, traditionally close to Israel, have taken this symbolic step, particularly as the Israeli army continues its military operations in Gaza. The offensive, launched after a deadly Hamas attack in 2023, has heightened international pressure for a renewed push toward a two-state solution.

On Monday, a summit in New York, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, will bring together world leaders to discuss the future of the peace process. Around ten countries are expected to confirm their formal recognition of a Palestinian state during the meeting.

The UK, historically a strong ally of Israel, is now preparing to shift its position. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to make a formal announcement later on Sunday. According to Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, speaking to the BBC, the final decision is linked to whether Israel has met certain conditions, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

“The Prime Minister will announce his decision later today, based on whether these commitments have been fulfilled,” Lammy confirmed, adding that he will represent the UK at the upcoming UN General Assembly.
