In a significant demonstration of its border security capabilities, Morocco thwarted 78,685 irregular migration attempts in 2024, according to the country’s Ministry of Interior. The data underscores the nation’s ongoing efforts to address migration pressures amid regional instability and security threats.

West African migrants dominate interception statistics

The ministry revealed that the majority of intercepted migrants originated from West Africa, accounting for 58% of the total. Migrants from the Maghreb region represented 12%, while those from East and Central Africa made up 9%. These figures highlight the diverse origins of individuals attempting irregular migration routes through Morocco.

Dismantling human trafficking networks

Authorities also reported the dismantling of 332 human trafficking networks during the year. These criminal groups have been noted for their adaptability, continuously refining their methods and strengthening operations through collaboration. The ministry emphasized the importance of disrupting these networks to curb irregular migration and protect vulnerable individuals.

Persistent challenges on northern borders

Morocco faced 14 attempts to breach the borders of Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish enclaves on the North African coast. These incidents involved more than 4,290 migrants, illustrating the persistent challenges along northern migration routes. The ministry highlighted the need for continued vigilance and enhanced security measures in these areas.

### Humanitarian efforts at sea
At sea, Moroccan authorities rescued 18,645 migrants, providing them with medical attention, temporary housing, and essential care. This humanitarian approach aligns with Morocco’s National Immigration and Asylum Strategy, which prioritizes humane solutions to migration challenges. Additionally, 6,135 migrants voluntarily returned to their home countries through coordinated efforts with their respective embassies.

A collaborative approach to migration management

Morocco’s efforts reflect its critical role in combating irregular migration and transnational trafficking networks. The country has demonstrated a willingness to collaborate with international partners to address migration challenges effectively. These initiatives not only enhance regional security but also underscore Morocco’s commitment to balancing enforcement with humanitarian considerations.

As migration pressures continue to evolve, Morocco’s proactive measures serve as a model for addressing complex migration dynamics in a region marked by instability and economic disparities.
