Moroccan Politician Calls for Ignoring Algeria’s Regime and Media Foolishness
Moroccan politician Mohammed Ouzzine has sharply criticized the ongoing hostilities from Algeria’s regime and its affiliated media, describing their rhetoric as absurd and harmful to regional relations. Ouzzine, addressing a congress of his Popular Movement party, condemned the inflammatory language directed at Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly regarding the country's sovereignty over its southern provinces.
He emphasized the foolishness of the daily hostility emanating from Algeria, which he described as absurd. “I am sharing this with you to highlight the absurdity of these claims,” Ouzzine remarked, urging his audience to disregard such rhetoric. He also extended a message of goodwill to Algeria, stating, “Let’s pray for our brothers… May God lead them to the right path and cleanse their hearts of hatred toward their brothers and neighbors.”
This marks another instance in which Ouzzine has publicly denounced Algeria's political and media campaign, which includes its support for the Polisario Front and the group's separatist claims in Sahara. Algeria has long supported the Polisario by financing, arming, and hosting them in the Tindouf camps, which are under regime control.
Ouzzine had previously condemned the actions targeting Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly during the 17th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of Members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held in Algeria. At that time, he also condemned the invitation extended by Algeria to Gloria Florez, a Colombian activist known for her strong backing of the Polisario Front.
Algeria’s ongoing hostility toward Morocco is tied to its backing of the separatist group and its opposition to Morocco’s efforts to resolve the Sahara issue through a UN-led political process. However, Morocco's position has been gaining growing international support, particularly for its Autonomy Plan, which has been recognized as a serious and credible solution to the dispute.
One of the latest developments fueling Algeria’s frustration was the recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces by France. In July, President Emmanuel Macron publicly affirmed France’s stance on Morocco’s territorial integrity, a position he reiterated during his State visit to Morocco in October. In his comments, Macron stressed that the future of Sahara lies within Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, highlighting the historic relationship between the two countries.
This recognition prompted Algeria to recall its ambassador to Paris and threaten sanctions against France. Macron, in turn, stated that France’s position was not intended to be hostile to any party but rather aimed at promoting regional stability.
Similarly, Spain also declared its unwavering support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, prompting a similar response from Algeria, which included recalling its ambassador to Spain.
As these international diplomatic shifts unfold, Morocco continues to gain momentum in the global community, reinforcing its stance on Sahara and challenging Algeria’s ongoing efforts to oppose its territorial sovereignty.
