Zelensky confirms arrest in killing of ex-Ukrainian parliament chief
The investigation into the murder of Andriy Parubiy, the former chairman of Ukraine’s parliament, has taken a significant step forward. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrest of the primary suspect following a swift operation by security forces. The assassination, which occurred on Saturday in Lviv, has drawn sharp focus amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
Arrest made after coordinated operation
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that the suspect was apprehended in the Khmelnytsky region, located between Lviv and Kyiv. The operation involved dozens of security officers and was described as “highly coordinated.” Klymenko emphasized that the murder was “carefully planned,” with further details expected from law enforcement in the coming days.
Zelensky expressed gratitude on social media for the rapid and efficient work of the investigators, assuring the public that the inquiry remains active.
A prominent pro-European figure
Andriy Parubiy, 54, was a pivotal figure in Ukraine’s pro-European movements, most notably during the 2014 Maidan Revolution. He served as the speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, from 2016 to 2019. Known for his leadership during the Maidan protests, Parubiy played a critical role in ousting the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia in 2014.
The former parliament chief was assassinated by gunfire in western Ukraine. While no official attribution has been made, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has hinted at potential Russian involvement.
History of survival and targeted attacks
This is not the first time Parubiy has faced attempts on his life. In 2014, he narrowly survived an assassination attempt involving a hand grenade. He was also on a Russian-issued wanted list, which includes thousands of Ukrainian officials, activists, and even Russian and Western figures critical of the Kremlin.
Parubiy’s legacy as a staunch advocate of Ukraine’s independence and European integration remains a symbol of resilience in a nation at war since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
