Yemen: UAE denies operating “secret prisons”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has strongly denied claims that it operated secret prisons in southern Yemen. The UAE Ministry of Defense described the allegations as “deliberate fabrications and disinformation” in a statement released overnight Tuesday.

The Gulf nation intervened in Yemen in 2015 alongside Saudi Arabia, although both countries later backed rival factions. Tensions rose when the UAE-supported Southern Transitional Council (STC) attempted to expand its influence in the south last December, prompting Saudi-led forces to regain control and force Emirati troops to withdraw.

On Monday, the governor of Hadramout, a province retaken by pro-Saudi forces, claimed to have discovered secret detention facilities allegedly used by UAE forces and promised action against those responsible. Foreign media were invited to visit the sites on Tuesday.

The UAE ministry insisted that the facilities in question were military accommodations, operational rooms, and fortified shelters, questioning the motives and actors behind the spread of these claims. It accused the allegations of being part of a systematic campaign to distort the UAE’s image for political purposes.
