Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit Russia from May 7 to 10, where he will attend events with President Vladimir Putin commemorating the Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II, according to the Kremlin.

The trip comes at a time of increased tension between China and the United States, particularly over high U.S. trade tariffs, and coincides with a temporary ceasefire ordered by Putin in Ukraine from May 8 to 10 to mark Victory Day on May 9.

China and Russia declared a "no limits partnership" just weeks before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, both countries have strengthened their cooperation in economic and military sectors, raising concerns in Western capitals.

Kremlin officials stated that Xi and Putin will engage in bilateral discussions focused on enhancing their strategic relationship and addressing international and regional issues. Several joint agreements are expected to be signed during the visit.

While Russia halts fighting in Ukraine temporarily, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized the gesture as a political show. China continues to claim neutrality in the conflict, though Western nations argue that Beijing’s close ties with Moscow provide essential support to the Kremlin.

Last month, Zelensky accused China of supplying arms to Russia and claimed that over 150 Chinese citizens were fighting alongside Russian troops, accusations Beijing has denied, calling them baseless.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson reiterated the importance of China-Russia strategic ties, especially as the global geopolitical landscape undergoes major shifts. The official emphasized their cooperation within international organizations like the United Nations, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the spokesperson stated that China and Russia aim to lead global governance reforms, oppose unilateralism and coercion, and promote a multipolar world with balanced economic development.

Amid the ongoing trade dispute, the U.S. has imposed tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports, to which Beijing has responded with tariffs of 125% on American products.

Reflecting on World War II, the Chinese official highlighted the vital roles played by both China and Russia in securing victory in the global fight against fascism. Xi will join other leaders, including Russia’s traditional allies, for a military parade on Moscow’s Red Square on May 9. The Kremlin has drawn symbolic comparisons between its military actions in Ukraine and the struggle against Nazi Germany during WWII.
