Wildfires disrupt French transport network as A6 closure and train delays continue

Travel conditions remained difficult across parts of France on Tuesday, July 14, as ongoing wildfires combined with extreme heat caused further disruptions on both rail and road networks. Thousands of holiday travelers faced delays after several fires forced authorities to restrict traffic on major routes, including the A6 motorway, while high-speed train services on the southeastern network were still affected.

The situation was particularly challenging around the Fontainebleau area, where fires prompted emergency measures and contributed to restrictions on transport links. Additional outbreaks were reported near Sens in the Yonne department and around Conneré in the Sarthe region, adding pressure to already strained travel conditions during the busy summer holiday period.

A6 motorway remains closed with reopening uncertain

The A6, one of France’s busiest road corridors connecting Paris and Lyon, remained closed in both directions as authorities continued to manage the consequences of nearby fires.

The motorway was inaccessible from exit 13 for drivers traveling from Paris toward Lyon and from exit 15 for those heading in the opposite direction. The concession operator APRR-AREA, part of the Eiffage group, indicated that the closure would remain in place until further notice and could potentially continue through the weekend depending on safety conditions.

The disruption has created major difficulties for motorists, particularly during a period marked by heavy seasonal traffic. Some drivers had previously been forced to leave the motorway abruptly and find alternative routes through surrounding areas, including sections near the Gâtinais French Regional Nature Park.

SNCF services affected on southeastern high-speed lines

Rail passengers were also impacted by the wildfire situation. Several high-speed services on the southeastern network experienced delays, while some trains were canceled due to operational restrictions linked to the fires and safety requirements.

Rail operators continued to monitor conditions closely, with adjustments made according to the evolution of the situation. Travelers were advised to check updated schedules before departure as disruptions could change rapidly.

Heatwave increases pressure on transport infrastructure

The combination of high temperatures and multiple fires has created additional challenges for French transport authorities. During periods of extreme heat, infrastructure management becomes more complex, requiring increased monitoring of roads, rail equipment and surrounding areas.

As emergency services continue their efforts to contain the fires, authorities are urging travelers to remain cautious and follow official guidance. The return to normal traffic conditions will depend largely on weather developments and the progress of firefighting operations.
