WHO warns Cuba’s health situation is deeply concerning amid energy crisis

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has expressed serious concern over Cuba’s deteriorating health situation, as the island faces an ongoing energy crisis linked to fuel shortages.

According to the WHO chief, healthcare systems must never be compromised by geopolitical tensions or energy disruptions. However, in Cuba, prolonged power outages and fuel scarcity are severely affecting hospitals and medical services.

The country has been struggling with daily blackouts that can last for many hours, limiting the operation of essential medical equipment and disrupting critical services such as emergency care and intensive care units. Reports indicate that thousands of surgeries have been postponed, while vulnerable patients—including those with chronic illnesses and pregnant women—are facing increased risks.

The crisis is closely tied to a broader fuel shortage, which has also impacted transportation, waste collection, and overall living conditions. Garbage accumulation, reduced public transport, and rising fuel prices are further aggravating public health risks.

Health officials and international organizations stress the urgency of supporting Cuba’s healthcare infrastructure, as the country struggles to maintain essential services during a period of severe economic and energy challenges.
