Cilia Flores, the wife of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, has long been regarded as one of the most influential figures within the country’s political establishment. Recent developments involving the Venezuelan leadership have once again placed her at the center of international attention.

Born in the town of Tinaquillo in northern Venezuela, Cilia Flores comes from a modest background and later moved with her family to Caracas. She pursued higher education in law and built a career as a lawyer, notably defending Hugo Chávez after his failed coup attempt in 1992. That period marked the beginning of her political engagement within the Bolivarian movement.

Flores played a role in the creation of political organizations that later formed the backbone of Venezuela’s ruling party. She served for years as a member of the National Assembly and made history in 2006 by becoming the first woman to preside over the legislature. Her rise strengthened her reputation as a key strategist within the governing elite.
