War in Ukraine: Moscow claims to have intercepted 250 Ukrainian drones in massive overnight attack
Russia announced on Monday that it had intercepted 251 Ukrainian drones overnight, describing it as one of Kyiv’s largest aerial offensives since the war began more than three and a half years ago. The attack reportedly targeted areas across the Black Sea region and Crimea, signaling a new escalation in the conflict.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 40 drones were shot down over Crimea, 62 over the Black Sea, and five over the Sea of Azov. Such a high number marks an unusually intense phase of aerial warfare between the two countries.
Since the launch of its invasion in February 2022, Russia has carried out daily drone and missile strikes against Ukraine, while Kyiv increasingly targets Russian energy infrastructure in response.
Moscow has also intensified its own attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in recent days, raising fears of a campaign to plunge the country into darkness ahead of the winter — a tactic reminiscent of late 2024.
As of late September, Russia controlled about 19% of Ukrainian territory, according to data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Diplomatic efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump during the summer have stalled, and Russian territorial gains have slowed in recent months.
