Violent clashes escalate during anti-government protests in Serbia

Anti-government protests across Serbia intensified on Friday night, marking the fourth consecutive day of unrest in cities including the capital, Belgrade. Police were accused of using excessive force, firing teargas at demonstrators and clashing with rival groups.

Dozens of injuries were reported and hundreds of people have been detained since the demonstrations began. The protests, largely student-led, originally started in November following a fatal collapse of part of the Novi Sad railway station roof, which killed 16 people. The tragedy sparked nationwide outrage over corruption and poor infrastructure oversight.

President Aleksandar Vučić defended the police, asserting the state’s strength against protesters. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ivica Dačić denied allegations of brutality, blaming protesters for initiating attacks. Videos circulating on social media showed riot police striking demonstrators with shields and batons amid flares lighting the streets.

Clashes involved anti-government protesters, pro-government loyalists, and riot police. In Novi Sad, protesters targeted the Serbian Progressive Party headquarters, chanting slogans and vandalizing property. The demonstrations demand justice for the Novi Sad victims, early elections, and an end to systemic corruption.

International observers, including Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, have expressed concern. He urged authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly and uphold human rights and the rule of law.
