Venezuela earthquake death toll approaches 3,000 as rescue operations wind down

The death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela in late June has risen to nearly 3,000, according to updated official figures, as international rescue teams gradually scale back search operations.

The earthquakes, which devastated communities across the region on 24 June, caused widespread destruction, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira, the area hardest hit by the disaster.

Rescue efforts shift from search to recovery

Emergency crews continue to work through collapsed buildings and debris fields, but hopes of finding additional survivors are fading.

Heavy machinery has increasingly replaced specialized rescue teams as authorities move toward recovery operations, focusing on clearing rubble and recovering victims still trapped beneath destroyed structures.

The scale of the devastation has left thousands of residents displaced, many of whom remain without permanent shelter weeks after the disaster.

Parks, temporary camps and emergency accommodation centres continue to host survivors who have yet to secure stable housing.

Humanitarian challenges persist

As rescue operations wind down, attention is increasingly turning to reconstruction and humanitarian assistance.

Authorities and aid organizations face significant challenges in providing housing, healthcare and basic services to affected communities while assessing the full extent of infrastructure damage.
