Van fire sparks explosions near Matignon in central Paris, swiftly contained

Several loud explosions erupted on Tuesday morning on Rue de Varenne, just steps from the Hôtel de Matignon in Paris’s 7th arrondissement. Authorities reported that a van caught fire shortly after 9:30 a.m., prompting emergency services to quickly secure the area and establish a safety perimeter around the government district.

Explosions close to the seat of government

Witnesses described hearing up to three consecutive blasts before the van fully ignited near the French Prime Minister’s residence. Police sources cited by Le Parisien confirmed that gas cylinders were discovered inside the vehicle, sparking initial fears of a significant detonation. Firefighters rapidly contained the blaze, ensuring that nearby buildings remained unharmed.

Fire brought under control, investigation underway

Approximately twenty Paris firefighters were deployed to manage the situation. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are examining whether the incident was accidental or intentional, though preliminary findings have not indicated any criminal intent.

Incident coincides with political transition

The event occurred a day after former Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced his resignation. Journalist Audrey Tison from franceinfo shared social media footage showing thick smoke rising from the van near Matignon, where Lecornu, Gabriel Attal, and Édouard Philippe were reportedly present at the time. The incident briefly heightened tension in the government district before officials confirmed the fire was fully contained.
