US VP Vance's visit to India amid trade tensions with Washington

US Vice President JD Vance has arrived in India for a four-day visit, with trade negotiations and a potential bilateral deal with the US at the forefront. The visit comes as India aims to avoid new US tariffs and solidify ties with President Donald Trump’s administration.

On the first day, Vance met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who welcomed him warmly at his New Delhi residence. Their discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, building on the talks held between Modi and Trump in February, which outlined a roadmap for enhanced cooperation.

The US is India's largest trading partner, and the two countries have been in talks to finalize a new trade agreement. These discussions gained urgency after Trump announced hefty tariffs, including a 26% tariff on Indian imports. However, Trump later suspended these country-specific tariffs for 90 days, positioning them as part of broader negotiations aimed at securing better deals with trade partners like India.

The trade deal under discussion aims to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, with a focus on integrating supply chains and creating jobs. This visit also occurs amidst a growing trade conflict between the US and China, India’s primary regional competitor. Vance's visit is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

India has been a key ally in Washington’s efforts to counter China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific. India’s participation in the Quad Security Dialogue with the US, Japan, and Australia positions it as a counterbalance to China. Vance’s visit is part of efforts to bolster this alignment.

Prime Minister Modi and Vance are expected to review the progress of bilateral relations and exchange views on global developments of mutual concern. Vance’s visit underscores the growing importance of the India-US partnership in addressing regional and global challenges.
