US support for Moroccan sovereignty sends strong global signal
French geopolitical expert and former European Parliament member Aymeric Chauprade emphasized that the United States’ renewed endorsement of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region delivers a powerful message to the international community.
Chauprade explained that, in a global context shaped by President Donald Trump’s strategic vision and ambition to uphold US global dominance, Washington’s clear stance on the Moroccan Sahara reaffirms American leadership and signals international momentum toward acknowledging Morocco's position.
This statement came in response to the reaffirmation by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the visit of Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, to Washington. The US once again confirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire territory, including the Sahara—an acknowledgment first made during Trump’s initial term and now reaffirmed in his second.
Chauprade concluded by stressing the importance of support from both France and the United States, permanent members of the UN Security Council. Their recognition of Moroccan sovereignty and endorsement of the autonomy initiative under Moroccan rule is a strong diplomatic message. It sets a precedent that could pave the way for broader international support in favor of Morocco’s position on this critical issue.
