US says it is clearing Strait of Hormuz amid tensions with Iran
The United States has begun operations to secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to President Donald Trump, as tensions with Iran continue to affect global energy flows and maritime security.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump said US forces were “clearing” the waterway and claimed that Iranian vessels involved in laying naval mines had been neutralized. The comments come amid heightened concerns over the safety of international shipping routes in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude exports passing through it. Disruptions in the area have had immediate repercussions on global energy markets, contributing to price volatility and supply concerns.
In recent weeks, fears of potential attacks on commercial vessels have effectively limited traffic through the strait, raising alarm among international stakeholders. Although much of the oil transported through the route is destined for markets outside the United States, the situation has still driven up fuel prices domestically.
Washington has repeatedly asserted that its military actions have significantly weakened Iran’s naval and air capabilities. However, independent verification of these claims remains limited.
The developments come as diplomatic efforts continue in parallel. Representatives from the United States and Iran have initiated talks in Islamabad, under the mediation of Pakistan, seeking to stabilize the situation following a fragile ceasefire.
The evolving situation highlights the intersection of military strategy, global trade, and energy security, as world powers navigate one of the most sensitive maritime corridors.
